"Pearl"

Pearl is a puppet I created in my Stop Motion I class at SCAD Atlanta. Her armature is made of wires, epoxy putty, and foam rubber. Her skin is made out of liquid latex . I finished her with acrylic paints, crystals, petals, beads, and candles. She's very careless and must be fancy at all times.

This image was then printed to scale at the size I wanted her to be so I could build my armature for her at the correct size.

Early sketches of her possible design and color tests.

Pearl's armature before liquid latex and cotton was added. She has hex nuts in each foot for tie downs

Pearls Foam Body was covered in thin layers of liquid latex and cotton to cover wires and resolve how her body parts would connect together. I then created liquid latex skin patterns to use on various parts of her body. It's important to make tests before you apply the skins. I painted small tests to make sure the textures were working.

Latex skins were attached to her body with contact cement. Since her body had been covered in a layer of liquid latex, the latex skins adhered well. Her feet ere created with black wrap with more liquid latex and cotton over top to blend into her legs.

Pearl was painting with a process called "ramping". She was painted with a dark base color, followed but a mid-tone color, and finished off with a light subtle color. This process creates contrast of lights and darks in her design, so it can be captured on film.

These are some of my first test photos of Pearl. I was trying to capture her vanity.
